Khoo Kongsi is the finest and grandest Chinese ancestral temple outside of China, built in the mid-19th century. It is also the most distinctive Chinese clan association in Malaysia with the family surname “Khoo” lineage tracing back 650 years.
The word “Kongsi” refers to a Chinese clan house (in today’s term association or society) setup by families with the same surname and lineage, originated many centuries ago from China. The principle, philosophy and ideals behind a clan house was adopted in many parts of Southeast Asia by the early Chinese settlers to support new arrivals socially and economically.
